The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes

In summary

Dr. Watson has a major role to play in Sherlock Holmes’ achievements, both as a companion and friend. The friendship between Watson and Holmes is vital because it is the one thing that is normal in Holmes’s life. Dr. Watson, the character in the novel, is used to create a more humane Holmes and to display his intellect and detective skills. This essay will explain Aristotle’s definition of friendship and show how Holmes exploits his friend for his own personal gain.

Sherlock Holmes was created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and is considered one of the greatest literary characters of all time. Guinness World Records listed this fictional detective, known for his prodigious skills in logic and observation, as “the most-portrayed movie character” of all time. Conan Doyle published “A Study in Scarlet”, a story about Holmes, in Beeton Christmas Annual in 1887. The author paints Holmes in a rather egotistical light, and also as a drug-addicted person. He is only saved from suicide by his cocaine addiction, as he lacks any friends and a significant partner due to his wacky personality. Mycroft Holmes has an older brother who is employed by the British government. Mycroft Holmes appears to be smarter. Holmes has an antisocial character, but his only desire is recognition.

John H. Watson is Sherlock Holmes’ assistant and friend. He goes by the name Dr. Watson. He narrates the majority of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, with the exception of four stories. He is retired from the army and has a small pension. His friend introduced him to Holmes, and he became his flatmate. Though he does lack Holmes’s intuitive abilities, he remains a highly intelligent surgeon who is a man of intelligence. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle describes Watson as a “strongly built, middle-sized male with a square-jawed face, thick neck and a beard” in The Adventures of Charles Augustus Milverton. The media portrays him as being two years older than Sherlock Holmes.

From our marriages to our work colleagues, friendship is at the core of every relationship. No matter what, a friend will always support you. Spending time with a friend and talking to them is what makes a friend. A friend always tells the truth and won’t replace you with anyone else. The friends we have are those who keep us physically and mentally strong. Walter Winchell said that a real friend is someone who comes in when everyone else leaves.

Aristotle’s beliefsAristotle believed there were three types of friends: those who are good, those who are useful, and those that enjoy pleasure.

Aristotle defines this type friendship as temporary and fragile. According to him, people are only friends for a single reason: benefit. Friendships based on utility occur when people become friends with each other because they share a common interest. Co-workers, partners in business, and sometimes neighbours are examples of friends who have a utility relationship. If you have a friendship like this with a neighbor, it could be because you help her out when she goes away while she stays home and vice versa. Aristotle believed that this kind of friendship was most common among the elderly, who often preferred profit to pleasure. This type can be changed and doesn’t have any sentimental values.

A friendship of pleasure is a friendship that is for youth, as this age group lives their life in search of amusement and pleasure. Aristotle states this type friendship is usually short-term as the tastes of these young people change over time. They want to try something new for their pleasure. These friendships can include people that you enjoy talking with, who accompany you on leisure activities or your school significant others. These imperfect friendships are based solely on shared memories, beauty and wealth. They can die very quickly. Aristotle says that these types of friendships are harmful for mental and physical health.

Aristotle considers this type of friendship to be the most ideal, because it is based upon mutual respect. This type tends to be more lasting than the previous two; in certain cases, this friendship can last you your entire lifetime. Among the examples, you can think of your partner, a friend that you’ve known for many years, or even your family. This kind of relationship takes time but is stronger and lasts a long time. These types of friendships may be hard to come by, but they can have a significant impact on your wellbeing and emotional health. It is most common that two people form this friendship when they realize how similar their beliefs, values and personalities are. This occurs mostly during adolescence or childhood. Aristotle believes that a friendship of this nature can make your life happier and more joyful.

The Adventures of Sherlock HolmesA Scandal of Bohemiais the first short story of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. In this tale, we are introduced to Irene Adler. The story begins with the King of Bohemia asking Holmes for help. The king tells Holmes that Irene Adler threatened to leak a photo of him and her to the media in order to cancel his wedding. The king tried before to find the photo but was unable to do so because he did not know where it was. Holmes and Watson make a deal to discover where the photo is. Watson helped him find the photo. However, Irene Adler managed to beat him to it.

Watson’s support is essential to Holmes’s success. Watson was instrumental in Holmes being able to find the picture and complete his task. Watson’s importance to Holmes is also shown in the story when Holmes told Watson not to go home and to stay where he was. I’m lost without Boswell. This looks interesting. It would have been a shame to be missing it. This shows Holmes’ preference to work together with Watson rather than by himself.

In this story, which is taken from The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes, Sherlock Holmes fights Professor James Moriarty. Holmes and Dr. Watson come up with a strategy to capture Moriarty. Moriarty begins by attempting to kill Holmes 3 times. Watson gets a list strange instructions from Holmes. They both leave without knowing the destination. Watson and Sherlock are in a bus disguised as an Italian elderly priest. They head for Victoria station to find Moriarty. After a few rides on the train, they reach Meiringen in Switzerland. Watson receives the note from a child once they have arrived. The boy says that a woman with a serious illness is staying in an adjacent hotel. Holmes’ deception was a lie, and he tells Watson in a handwritten note that he is alone with Moriarty. Watson thinks that Moriarty has died and there are also footprints that lead to a dead-end. Watson’s sorrowful return to England leads him to finish his narrative journal of Holmes’ adventures, stating that Sherlock Holmes had been “the wisest and best man” he knew (Doyle 755). Watson is loyal and faithful to Sherlock Holmes. Holmes also trusts Watson and keeps him at his side in times of danger.

ConclusionSherlock Holmes, Dr. Watson and their relationship was very interesting and crucial to Holmes’ success. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle shows their love for each other as far too strong to simply call them friends. The media may have changed how Holmes and Watson were portrayed, but one thing has not changed: Holmes and Watson still needed each other. Holmes tells Watson, “Good Old Watson!” You are the only constant in an age of change.
