Movie Summary

Django Unchained was the movie I chose for my film review. The film is set during the late 1850s. Slavery was still common and widespread in this time period. Django Unchained is opened by two men riding horses and pulling a group of slaves bound together at the feet. This scene takes place on a frigid winter night. The two horseback riders meet a doctor named King Schultz. It is evident that his wagon is being pulled along by his horse. Dr. Schultz is socializing with the pair and asking them if there was a Django. When he realized that Django did indeed belong to the slave line, he tried to negotiate and buy Django.

The movie begins with Dr. Schultz executing the two men who had threatened to kill him. The men are dead and Dr. Schultz declares Django free. They ride away on horseback to the closest town. Dr. Schultz is searching for brothers who have a reward on their heads and Django’s information may help him find them. They soon discover that three brothers live on a plantation. The bounty hunters are then left to complete their task. Django’s talents may prove useful for Dr. Schultz in the future when collecting bounty. Django is also a talented sharpshooter, like himself. Django tells Dr. Schultz that he was married to Broomhilda, and that the couple had been separated when they tried to escape slavery. Dr. Schultz was moved by Django’s tale and told him that they could go on a bounty hunting trip together through the cold winter. Then, when summer arrives, they would search for Django’s bride. After fulfilling many bounties over a period of years, they finally have enough cash to set out on their quest to find Django’s woman and free her. After some research, the two conclude that Broomhilda is located on a large plantation called Candieland. Calvin Candie inherited his father’s plantation. Dr. Schultz (Django) and Calvin Candie visit Candieland. In truth, they search for Broomhilda in order to free her. They quickly realize that Broomhilda has indeed been captured at Candieland. Once they have some time to themselves, they decide on a plan to free her. After spending some time with each other, tensions start to rise. But they still decide on a fight and promise Calvin that they’ll be back in seven days. Stephen, a housemaid from Candieland discovers they all know each other. The housemaid at Candieland realizes that the three know each other and captures them all. The papers that sealed the deal were signed and a gunfight erupted between Django, the plantation, and Dr. Schultz after Calvin was killed. This resulted in the death of Dr. Schultz. After a few minutes, Django was captured and sent to a mine where he will spend his remaining days as a slave. Django, however, escapes from the mine and kills his transporters while stealing some explosives. Django goes back to Candieland where he dynamite the entire plantation while everyone else is at Calvin’s funeral. Django returns to Candieland and dynamites the place while everyone is attending Calvin’s funeral. Django, Broomhilda and the rest of Candieland are finally free to begin their lives in freedom. Sociological TermsIn the Django Unchained movie, racism is the first and most prominent sociological concept. This is located in chapter 11. Racism refers to the belief that races aren’t created equal. In the 1800s, the idea that some races were not equal was born. In many scenes, Django has his status questioned by the audience because he’s a free person. Django was considered a lower class person because of his race. Chattel slavery is the second term in the Django Unchained text that can be found at chapter 10. Chattel slavery refers to the act of treating another as if it were property. The slave trade is evident throughout the whole film. Among the many examples are slaves forced to fight for entertainment or to work in fields. The main conflict between Django Schultz, and Django revolves around the slavery. In chapter 11, the third sociological concept that appears in Django Unchained is discrimination. Discrimination can be a subjective thought process based on what other people have said, or what one believes from previous experiences (Griffiths and others, 2019). You can discriminate against color, age, gender, health, etc. Many people discriminate. Calvin’s discussion of the value of his slaves is based on health and age. Other examples include making assumptions regarding someone’s status and wealth based off information they have, such as speaking another language. The fourth sociological concept that appears in Django Unchained is significant others. You can find it in chapter 1 of this text. Significant other is someone who is important and has an impact on someone’s life. Django, at the start of the movie, is motivated by the hope of finding Broomhilda, his significant partner. Django becomes enraged after seeing Broomhilda’s suffering at Candieland. Django suppresses his anger until the situation deteriorates and a shooting occurs. Django gave up during the shootout because he feared for Broomhilda. Django was still willing to give his life in order to protect his girlfriend, even after he had been captured and taken to a mining company. Language is the fifth sociological concept that appears in the Django Unchained movie. It is found in chapter 3. Language is one way people communicate. This role is important, even though it may not seem so. It would have been difficult to find Broomhilda because she speaks German fluently. Django and Dr. Schultz would have been able to tell that they were searching for Broomhilda. But, instead of revealing this fact to the public, they pretended that Dr. Schultz was in search of a slave who was fluently German. That would be Broomhilda. This was a very effective disguise to help Django find his long-lost bride. The Django Unchained movie uses the term role strain in chapter 4. When someone is stressed because of the role they play in their daily life, this is called role strain (Griffiths and al., 2019,). Slavery is often a common scenario. Slave-owners believed their slaves were to work continuously, without breaks or rest. Working long and hard hours can have a negative impact on your body. It will break you down physically and mentally. Many slaves sacrificed their lives for freedom, as Django & Broomhilda had done. They simply wanted to get away from the daily grind that was killing and destroying them. ConclusionI have thoroughly enjoyed Django Unchained. This movie contains a variety of sociological terminology that is evident throughout. The terms used in the movie may not be seen as positive, but they do show the outcome of acts of discrimination and racist behavior. The movie’s plot kept me on my toes with suspense, action and excitement. It felt like the movie was holding the climax in place for a very long time. This movie is not just a good entertainment. It’s also a lesson to show how far our society has progressed to create a place where people treat each other the way they would like to be treated.
